Nieces in August
I got to spend a day and a bit with Layla and Allie this past week while I was home. Layla is well into potty training, and insists on dressing herself and bucklin herself into her carseat. She talks a lot and negotiates for sweets, as in this conversation:
Layla: Can I have ice cweam?
Grandma Sandra: After you eat your peanut butter sandwich you can have a little ice cream.
L: Don't want peanut butter.
GS: Do you want cheese?
L: I want ice cweam.
GS: Not until after. How about some mac'n'cheese and peas? You like that!
L: Ummm... can I have ice cweam?
Allie, who participates in every team sport known to kid-dom, has cheer practice three times a week after school. She started school Monday and conversed with me at length about the school lunches and her fear of accidentally wearing the same thing as another girl. She quizzed Mama and me on ways we would and wouldn't like to die. I said I'd like to die being defended by a giant ape; Allie, more sensibly, wants to die after living a long time, but specifies that she wants to die fashionably. She also likes making forts, and we set up tents in the yard and slept in them quite well Wednesday night, with the moon lighting the yard.

Persistence and a good lunch scored Layla an ice cream cone; she was fascinated by her messy face in the mirror.

Truman is not one to be moved from a favorite napping place by a mere baby and her toys; Layla acts out stories with my action figures.

Tent city in the front yard; Big sister antagonizes little sister, who storms out of the tent.

Allie holds a flower for me to photograph; shows her true colors; and imitates the sunflowers next to her.

Mama and Layla compare their flowers; Allie gets ready for the third day of fourth grade. (She wasn't satisfied with her outfit, but I am fashion impaired and didn't understand why.)

From a walk down the dirt road: wild sunflowers and pines; fallen sweet gum leaf.

Adventures at home
I forgot, I have a few pictures of me exploring the city (and staying home). I go months without posting, and then I have a flurry, I guess. :)

At my apartment: Truman is tuckered out after helping mark research papers; a garden spider and morning glories on my balcony.
Downtown Little Rock:

Riverfront Park with the River Market in the background; the Arkansas Queen taking tourists up the river; water lily in the pond below the hog statue.

The hog statue in the River Market, wearing the Doctor Who scarf I knitted. (It's only 11'8" long, shorter than the original but just right for me!)

On the "Sculpture Promenade" from the River Market toward the Clinton Library, this is one called Fiesta. They're almost right under the interstate bridge that crosses into North Little Rock.

Atlanta-St. Louis
Last week I went to a wedding in Atlanta and then along to visit my friend Andrea and her family in St. Louis.

The wedding had a Hawaiian theme. My friend Jane did my hair for the wedding; my bear dressed up afterwards with one of the fresh flowers.

The wedding favors were shell necklaces and woven grass fans with the stenciled program attached; a T-rex skeleton replica about to attack the Atlanta airport.

Views from the plane window: clouds, St. Louis arch.

In St. Louis, we visited a wild bird sanctuary where we saw among many other things, peregrine falcons, bald eagles, and an enormous possum.
We also visited Grant's Farm, a hooved wildlife preserve/zoo/promotional park for Anheuser-Busch. Neat place, especially for the price!

The fence is supposedly made from melted-down Civil War rifles; Grant's cabin.

White elk; yaks.

The goat-feeding pen. I've never seen so many pygmy goats!

Stork and geese; giant tortoise.

The camels were quite affectionate, hoping for treats.

An antique painted carnival cart in the carriage barn (home to some of the famous Budweiser Clydesdales); covered bridge exiting the park.

A mantis on the window outside the boarding area at the airport; leaving St. Louis on a hazy evening; arriving in Little Rock.
The next day, I met Mama, Allie, Hannah and Madison for a day at the amusement park/water park. Six hours, and no sunburn! Vigorous re-application of sunscreen really works.

The crew, before entering the park; a creek and the road at a picnic area near Hot Springs.
